Gimme Fiber Day: Celebrating the Technology Powering Central Florida
What Is Gimme Fiber Day?
Gimme Fiber Day is an annual, unofficial holiday celebrated every November 4 to recognize fiber-optic internet and the communities that depend on it. It is a day for industry members, local leaders, and neighbors to talk about the speed, reliability, and capacity that only fiber delivers.
The day also carries a call to action. Fiber still isn’t available everywhere, so the celebration encourages support for local broadband initiatives and connecting communities left behind. Across social media, supporters mark the occasion with the hashtag #GimmeFibre.
How It Started
The FTTH Council Global Alliance launched Gimme Fiber Day on November 4, 2013. The alliance brings together the FTTH Councils of Africa, the Americas, Asia Pacific, Europe, and the Middle East and North Africa. Its goal was to raise awareness of fiber to the home as a future-proof broadband solution and to show the positive impact it has on communities.
The date was chosen with care. November 4 is the birthday of Sir Charles Kuen Kao, known as the Father of Fiber Optics. His research showed that glass fibers could carry enormous amounts of information as pulses of light, which sparked a revolution in communications. He shared the 2009 Nobel Prize in Physics for that work and was knighted in 2010.
The celebration has continued every year since, with the Fiber Broadband Association and its global partners carrying the message that no home or business should be left behind.
Why Fiber Matters
Fiber carries data as light through strands of glass, which means fast speeds, low latency, and room to grow. Because the technology delivers the same speeds for uploads as for downloads, it supports how neighbors live and work today: video calls, cloud applications, smart home devices, online learning, and streaming, often all at once.
Fiber is also dependable. It is less affected by weather and distance than older copper-based connections, and the network can be upgraded for years to come without replacing the cable in the ground. For businesses, that reliability translates into confidence. For families, it means WiFi that keeps up with every device in the house.
Where Smart City Fits In
Gimme Fiber Day is a day we take personally. Smart City has served Central Florida since 1969, and we were the first provider to offer fiber to the home (FTTH) in the region. Long before fiber became a household term, we were building the network that neighbors would rely on for years to come.
That early commitment shaped what Smart City Fiber Internet is today: a local network, backed by local people, delivering the speed and reliability that Gimme Fiber Day celebrates. Our fiber connects homes and businesses directly, with real, reliable support from a team that lives and works in the same community.
Fiber is especially valuable for multifamily properties and planned communities, where many households share one network and expectations run high. Compared with traditional coax cable, fiber offers our property partners and their residents clear advantages:
- Consistent performance at scale. Coax networks share bandwidth among many customers on the same line, so speeds can slow when a whole building or neighborhood is online at once. Fiber has the capacity to keep every resident connected without that slowdown.
- Symmetrical speeds. Coax is built to favor downloads. Fiber delivers the same speed for uploads, which matters for video calls, remote work, cloud backup, and gaming.
- Built for the long term. Fiber can be upgraded by changing the equipment at each end, not by replacing the cable. Coax runs closer to its limits and relies on amplifiers along the way, which adds points of failure.
- Greater reliability. Fiber is not affected by electrical interference and holds up better against weather and distance, which means fewer service calls for residents and property teams.
- A stronger amenity. Reliable, high-capacity internet is a top priority for renters and homebuyers. Fiber helps communities attract and keep residents and supports smart home, security, and building technology.
- Easier planning for developers. In new planned communities, fiber can be installed during construction, so neighborhoods open with future-ready infrastructure already in place.
The spirit of the day, bringing fiber to more neighbors, is the same spirit behind our work every day. We believe in delivering reliable solutions and brilliant service, and fiber is how we keep that promise well into the future.
Celebrate With Us on November 4
This November 4, we invite neighbors to join the conversation. Share a #GimmeFibre post, tell us what fast, reliable internet makes possible at home or at work, and help spread the word that every community deserves fiber.
